Every day, employers regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) need drug and alcohol tests for pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty and follow-up testing. Each of those tests starts with a qualified collector. If you are wondering how to start a drug testing business, becoming a DOT urine collector is the foundation, and it is a business you can build while keeping your current job.

This guide walks you through the steps: getting qualified, adding breath alcohol testing, lining up supplies, setting up the business, and finding your first clients.

Step 1: Become a qualified DOT urine collector

People often search for "DOT collector certification," but DOT does not issue a collector license. Instead, the rules in 49 CFR Part 40 say what a collector must do to be qualified. Under §40.33, a urine collector must have:

  1. Basic information: knowledge of Part 40, the current DOT Urine Specimen Collection Guidelines, and the DOT agency rules that apply to the employers you collect for.
  2. Qualification training: training on the collection procedures, completing the Federal Drug Testing Custody and Control Form (CCF), problem collections such as shy bladder and attempts to tamper, fatal flaws and how to correct problems, and the collector's responsibility for integrity, confidentiality and privacy.
  3. Initial proficiency demonstration: five consecutive error-free mock collections, monitored and evaluated by a qualified person. Two are uneventful collections, and the others cover an insufficient specimen quantity, a temperature out of range, and a donor who refuses to sign the CCF and initial the bottle seal.
  4. Refresher training: at least every five years, you must repeat qualification training and a new proficiency demonstration.
  5. Error correction training: if you make a mistake that causes a test to be cancelled, you must complete error correction training within 30 days, including three consecutive error-free mock collections.

Keep your training records. Employers, third-party administrators and auditors may ask for documentation that you are qualified.

Get Certable's DOT Urine Specimen Collector course covers the qualification training online and self-paced, with 12 months of access. Your five mock collections are completed live online with a Get Certable monitor, on evenings and Saturdays, and we ship your mock collection supplies to you.

Step 2: Add Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT) qualification

Many employers need both drug and alcohol testing. Offering both makes you more useful to clients. DOT alcohol tests are done by a Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT) or a Screening Test Technician. Under §40.213, a BAT needs basic knowledge of the rules, qualification training on the evidential breath testing device (EBT) they will use, an initial proficiency demonstration of seven consecutive error-free mock tests, refresher training every five years, and error correction training if a mistake causes a test to be cancelled.

Because the proficiency demonstration must be on the type of device you will use, choose your EBT before you schedule your mock tests. The Get Certable BAT course includes all seven mock tests live online.

Step 3: Get your equipment and supplies

A basic collection kit usually includes:

For alcohol testing you will need a DOT-approved evidential breath testing device and mouthpieces. Our BAT course is built around the AlcoVisor Jupiter EBT, available from PAS, along with other collection equipment.

Step 4: Set up your business

The business side is similar to any small service business. Requirements vary, so check your state and local rules before you start.

This guide is general information, not legal or tax advice. Check your state's requirements and talk to a qualified professional about your situation.

Step 5: Decide how you will operate

Mobile collections can be a practical way to start the business while keeping your current job, since you can choose the times and areas you serve.

Step 6: Find clients

Set up a Google Business Profile, a simple website, and a short flyer listing your services, hours and service area. Being on time, accurate and responsive is how you earn repeat business and referrals.

Step 7: Set your pricing

Prices vary a lot by area and service, so research your local market instead of copying a number. Things to consider:

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a certification to become a DOT urine collector?

DOT does not issue a collector license or a government certification. Under 49 CFR §40.33, a collector must be qualified: know the basic rules, complete qualification training, pass an initial proficiency demonstration of five consecutive error-free mock collections, take refresher training at least every five years, and complete error correction training if they make a mistake that causes a test to be cancelled. Training providers issue a certificate of completion as documentation.

How long does it take to become a DOT collector?

It depends on how quickly you finish the self-paced coursework and schedule your mock collections. Get Certable courses come with 12 months of access, and mock collections are done live online with a Get Certable monitor on evenings and Saturdays.

Can I start a drug testing business while keeping my current job?

Yes. Many collectors begin by taking scheduled or mobile collections during hours that work around their current job, then grow from there. The key is being reliable and available when your clients need you.

Do I need to be a BAT to perform DOT alcohol tests?

Yes. Evidential breath alcohol tests must be performed by a qualified Breath Alcohol Technician. Under 49 CFR §40.213, that includes qualification training on the device you will use and an initial proficiency demonstration of seven consecutive error-free mock tests.

How often do collectors need refresher training?

Both urine collectors and BATs must complete refresher training at least every five years (49 CFR §40.33 and §40.213).

Do I need a license or insurance to open a collection site?

Requirements vary by state and locality. Check with your state and local agencies about business registration and any drug testing or collection site rules, and talk to an insurance agent about general and professional liability coverage.
